In response to recent reports that the Xbox 360 is technically capable of supporting Sony’s Blu-ray format–a topic that recently came up in a Japanese interview with Xbox executive Peter Moore–Microsoft has released a statement clarifying their formal position.
“Microsoft firmly stands behind the HD-DVD format as the best choice for our consumers,” the press release reads.
But, Microsoft adds, the “future-proofed” Xbox 360 “has the flexibility to adapt to consumers’ needs,” such as the addition of the recently-announced external HD-DVD drive. “Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support, are incorrect.”
Microsoft adds that the company is “fully committed” to the HD-DVD format and has “absolutely no plans” to support formats like Blu-ray.
This press release was issued in response to Peter Moore’s comments last week to Japanese site ITMedia:
“While we do plan on an external drive of some form, it is possible for us to adapt to future changes in the [next-gen DVD market] situation.”
